城下町の歴史的な街並みが残る島根県津和野。伝統建造物保存地区の中心を貫く本町通り沿いに建てられた戦前の木造建築を活用し、1930年創業の老舗茶舗を祖父母から継承した施主が、フランス人の夫とともに始めた店舗・カフェ・ゲストハウスへと改修しました。
既存建物は、古民家としては比較的階高が高く、和洋折衷の外観と石畳の通りに面した大きな開口が特徴的です。保存地区内に立地するため外観は既存の姿を保持しつつ、１階を店舗・カフェ、２階をゲストハウスとして内部を改修しました。前所有者により細かく間仕切られていた１階は内装を全て撤去して開放的な大空間とし、外廊下が囲む田の字型平面の和室で構成された2階は、和室の趣を可能な限り残しながら、２ベッドルームの宿泊施設として必要な要素を付加していきました。
１階では、旧店舗同様にカウンター越しの対面販売を大切にしたいという施主の思いを受け、販売・ワークショップ・カフェの各機能に対応する、ひとつながりの長いカウンターを空間の中心に据えました。通りから視認性の高い正面側では販売、参加者が囲めるU字状のカーブではワークショップ、奥のテーブル席周辺ではカフェと、顧客との対面関係を保ちながらも場所に応じて用途が変化します。明るくホスピタリティに溢れる施主がカウンター中央から全体を見渡し、来訪者と常時コミュニケーションをとる、銭湯の番台のような姿をイメージしました。
また、茶葉の袋詰めから物販、飲食提供、不定期ワークショップまで多様な業務を少人数で担うことから、バックヤードとカウンターの間のL字状の動線に作業スペースを集約し、効率的な運営を可能にしています。
存在感のある大きなカウンターは、地元産広葉樹の無垢材を地層のように積層し、柔らかな曲線を描きながら来訪者を迎え入れます。その背後のボリュームには、庇や飾り柱といった既存建物特有の外観意匠を引用し、純和風とは異なるこの建物の趣に呼応させ、新旧、和洋が心地よく共存する空間としました。
２階に残した広間や区切りのないカウンター構成は、人の出入りや用途応じた柔軟な運用を可能とし、イベント開催や夜間のバー利用など、将来的な活動の変化や拡張も想定したおおらかな設えとしています。観光客も地元住民も気軽に立ち寄ってお茶と会話を楽しめる、お茶を介したくつろぎの場として、地域の新たなハブとなることを期待しています。
Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture is well known for its well-preserved historic townscape. A prewar wooden building located in the center of the preservation district was renovated into a combined tea shop, café, and guesthouse. The client, who inherited a long-established tea shop founded in 1930 from her grandparents, began this new venture together with her French husband.
The existing building features a relatively high ceiling for a traditional wooden house, along with an eclectic Japanese–Western facade and large openings facing the stone-paved street. While the exterior appearance was carefully maintained in accordance with the district guideline, the interior was reconfigured with a tea shop and café on 1F and a guesthouse on 2F. The 1F, previously subdivided into small rooms, was completely opened into a single generous space. The 2F, originally composed of tatami rooms arranged in a traditional four-room layout surrounded by a corridor, was adapted into a two-bedroom guesthouse while retaining its original character.
At the center of 1F, a long continuous counter is placed in response to the client’s wish to maintain face-to-face service across a counter as in their former shop. Its function shifts according to location: retail sales near the street frontage, workshops around a curved U-shaped section, and café use toward the rear. This configuration allows flexible use while maintaining face-to-face communication. The design envisions the cheerful owner standing at the center of the counter, overseeing the entire space and engaging with guests, like the receptionist of a traditional public bathhouse.
To support diverse activities—from tea packaging and retail to F&B service and occasional workshops—managed by a small team, workspaces were consolidated along an L-shaped path between the counter and the back-of-house, enabling efficient operation.
The prominent counter, crafted from layered locally sourced solid hardwood and shaped in gentle curves, serves as a focal element that welcomes guests into the space. The volume behind the counter references characteristic details of the existing facade, such as eaves and decorative columns, responding to the building's unique character and creating a harmonious coexistence of old and new, Japanese and Western atmosphere.
The overall design allows for flexible use in response to potential future change and expansion of their activities, including events and nighttime bar use. Envisioned as a relaxed place where both locals and tourists can casually gather to enjoy tea and conversation, the project aspires to become a new community hub centered around tea.
